There are No Difficult Couples!
There are no “Difficult Couples” … only those with whom practitioners are having difficulty, because practitioners’:
• Are underprepared/undertrained-A few workshops do not prepare practitioners for practicing effectively with couple clients.
• Have not resolved similar issues in their own lives-We cannot accompany clients on journeys to master/manage problematic dynamics that we have not mastered in ourselves and our relationships.
• Are not sufficiently grounded and practicing a practice model which also may be underpowered for the work.
Being present as a therapist while members of a couple enact their dynamics is comparable to standing in front of the intake of the jet engine of a Boeing 747! The suction is whelming!
Being present, remaining free of the blades of their couple system and providing effective service requires firmly grounding oneself in your practice model and treatment purposes.
The Essential Fragrances of Gestalt Practice
Composing fine perfumes involves identifying and extracting the essences of fragrant flowers.
We will extract and present the essences of The Cleveland Model of Gestalt Couple Practice knowledge and skills in these one day workshops.
Optional Practicum Days will follow to provide further supervised skill development opportunities.
Gestalt Couple Practice: Being, Knowing and Doing
Our Gestalt couple practice model provides:
*Supports for developing the personal presence of the practitioner as an effective intervener with couple systems (Practitioner’s ”Being”)
*Knowledge with which to understand the complex dynamics of human relationships (Practitioner’s “Knowledge”)
*Skill training to support enhancing essential system processes (Practitioner’s “Skills”)
In these workshops we will provide participants with opportunities to:
*Assess their personal presence as a practitioner with couples
*Sample a Gestalt knowledge base for building and enhancing relationships
*Explore and practice skills in assessing and intervening with system processes
*Make applications of this practice model to common couple system issues
We teach and practice "Joining before Differentiating" in relationship building and will explore and experiment with this essential principle.
Optional Practicum Days:
Following each workshop we provide an optional practicum activity day during which participants will alternate between the roles of couple members, practitioners and observers.
In these roles they will observe further demonstrations of Model practice skills and opportunities to practice these skills under direct supervision
Sessions will be videotaped for participant’s use.
